New Nintendo Switch 2 Details Emerge, As FCC Filings Show Faster Wifi & Possible Amiibo Figurines

The FCC has revealed new details surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2, including faster Wi-Fi and possible Amiibo support. The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, was initially announced on January 16, 2025. While the details on a concrete release date are still sparse, fans can most likely expect it to be released sometime later this year.
As spotted by The Verge, who got their info from FCC filings, it looks as though the upcoming console will have some decent upgrades, including faster Wi-Fi and potentially faster charging and Amiibo support as well. The NFC support can be found within the Joy-Con controller, which seemingly confirms the ability to use Amiibo figures just as the Nintendo Switch did.

Faster Wi-Fi for a Smoother Experience
If faster Wi-Fi is on a player’s wishlist, it looks like that may come true. The FCC filings state that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks. This is a notable improvement from the Switch console’s support for Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). However, it’s important to note that Wi-Fi 7 is the most current technology, with many devices already supporting it. So, whether a newer version of the Switch 2 will include that is merely up for speculation.

Nintendo Is Already Making Plans To Prevent Switch 2 Console Shortages At Launch
Nintendo is already prepared for the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch, anticipating sales well in advance to prevent scalpers and meet player demand.
There are also a few details about charging. It looks like the Nintendo Switch 2 console will have two USB-C ports for charging: one at the top, and one at the bottom. Similarly, there is a mention of a possible adapter for the Switch 2 that will go up to 20V, which is an increase from the original Switch’s 15V adapter. But there is no hard confirmation about increased charging speeds, and the Switch 2 is still rated at a maximum of 15V.
Amiibo Support On The Nintendo Switch 2 Is Highly Likely
Figurine Collectors Rejoice
It is stated that the right Joy-Con controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 will support NFC and have an RFID feature, much like its predecessor did. This shows hope for Amiibo figurine support, which is a point of note for those who want to continue their collection. Amiibo’s were introduced for the initial Nintendo Switch, and with the use of an electronic chip, the console reads them (either within cards or figurines) to bring specific characters to certain games.
A good example of this was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which had several figurines and cards available to scan. This allowed players to bring some of their favorite villagers to their homesteads with ease and made the game feel even more immersive. Amiibo figurines for Nintendo consoles have long been a way for players to both collect figurines and unlock unique content since 2014, so this reveal should be reassuring for Amiibo fans.
While there is still no release date set for the Nintendo Switch 2, hopefully, more information will be released soon, as the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct takes place on April 2, 2025.
